Miscellaneous ramblings from the President

Hi all,
This has been a strange spring to say the least. It seems that every time we attempt to get the Vette out it rains or snows! If your like Cathy and I, we have to balance getting spring chores done yet make time to enjoy our club and the car. We did get out last weekend with Les and Kelly, Dave Cooper and Mike and Mary for the Colorado Springs rally.  Nope, no trophies brought home. We think we were right but the answers sheet was wrong.

Well, just a few weeks before our Fathers Day show. I have hit up a few of my suppliers for door prizes etc. If you have a chance see if you can gather some also. Anything is good from car wax to what ever. I will bring quite a few flyers to the meeting. I think Mary has some she will bring also. We have to tie up loose ends and this meeting because the day draws close. Next weekend quite a few of us are headed to Montrose. If you aren’t signed up think about it. It should be a great time. I look at Montrose as a get away just to be with friends.

We’ll see you at the meeting.

National Corvette Museum Report:

NCCC SUPPORTS NCM
The National Council of Corvette Clubs (NCCC) has supported the National Corvette Museum (NCM) since its inception, with its very own NCM Hall of Fame members Joe Pike and Patrick Donovan involved in the original museum planning and ground breaking in 1994.  Over the years, several NCCC Presidents have sat on NCM’s Board of Directors, and many members have served as NCM Ambassadors around the country.  Today, the NCCC comprises about 275 Clubs in 16 Regions across the US with over 17,500 members, many of whom are also museum members.

Museum plans have been under way for several years to build a Motorsports Park in Bowling Green, KY across the road from the NCM; funding is solely from donations.  Contributors of $15,000 become “One-Acre Club” members.  Thus far, some NCCC members and individual Corvette Clubs have joined the “One-Acre Club”.  Douglas McMahan, NCCC National Director of Public Relations, announced that NCCC will support the Park on a national level, having contributed $15,000 to the Park’s “One-Acre Club”.  Mr. McMahan feels that NCCC, as a National Corvette organization, should continue to support NCM in promoting the Corvette, its heritage and development.  NCCC believes that the Motorsports Park will add a new dimension and opportunity to the museum for all enthusiasts.

Since a portion of annual club dues are for the NCCC, all 275 NCCC Corvette Clubs have contributed indirectly to this project.  Ground breaking ceremonies for the Motorsports Park will be on June 28, 2013 at the museum’s 60th Anniversary Event, coinciding with the NCCC annual convention in Bowling Green.  I anticipate many NCCC members will attend the ceremonies.  The event is free, but requires admission to the museum for non-NCM members; credentials for the NCCC convention are not valid for admission.

I will have $10 raffle tickets at the next DtRC meeting for the 60th Anniversary coupe, the last C6 Corvette produced.
NOTE:  I’m pleased that NCM selected my coupe, the first red ’02 off the line, to represent the 2002 year at the 60th Anniversary exhibit of Vettes for each production years.

New Member Corner: Questions and answers from our newest members Les and Kelly Rhoades

Tell us how you got started with a Corvette, how many you have owned

In the past 20 plus years we have owned 5 different Corvettes and our current ride is a 2008 Victory Red coupe; 3LT, Z51, 6-Speed. Kelly drove a Mustang in High School and I purchased a new Camaro when soon after I joined the Military. Since our marriage we have owned a couple Camaro’s, a couple Datsun 280z’s, but starting a family put a hold on our budget and thus ended the 2-door era for us for several years. It was the life changing rage of the 1992 Hurricane Andrew that destroyed half of our household belongings and our beautiful 280ZX. To replace the Z-car we decided it was finally time to buy our first Corvette. We purchased a sharp looking two tone silver 1981 ….not the year we wanted, but it was a great entry level Corvette and we could afford it. It was several years later (and our third Corvette) that we finally purchased our wholly grail of Corvettes. A 1972 Sunflower Yellow Rhoadester, 350, 4-speed, white top, fully loaded. Over the next two years I rebuild everything from the suspension, engine, interior and new top. We received well over 30 trophies with that car and at its final car show before selling it in the Fall of 1999 it won First Place yet again. A job opportunity and move to Switzerland forced the sale. At that same show at Holiday Isle in the Florida Keys we received best of show out of over 300 Corvettes, which was picked by Corvette Engineer Dave McClellan himself. The trophy was called; Dave’s Pick. I still have the autographed trophy in my office. (Corvette Trivia: Dave McClellan succeeded Zora Arkus-Duntov as Corvette's Chief Engineer in 1975, and stayed in the position until his retirement in 1992.)

Where do you live, number of kids, how did you meet? how long you’ve been married

We currently live in South East Aurora across from Cherry Creek State Park. We have one daughter. Her name is Dana.  She attended one club meeting with us. Kelly and I met on a blind date, which was orchestrated by our mothers. Kelly was 19 and right out of High School and I was 24 and just finished my first hitch in the Air Force. We got married a year later and have been married for 28 years.

Sports or crafts you enjoy

I’m a professional photographer so that tops the list of hobbies for me. I have published two travel books; one featuring Switzerland and the other one details Provence, France. Kelly and I are currently on a bowling league. We enjoy hiking as we learned the value of it marching all over Switzerland from alp to alp. We tired the AVT thing for one season when we first moved to Colorado and those beasts got us around the Colorado Mountains and back roads wonderfully. We like to camp, ski, watch movies, and we are both certified scuba divers, softball, card games, board games, PS3 Golf, real golf, 4-wheeling in our Jeep...we are open to just about anything…and yes I have been sky diving. We like adventure.

Where were you born, what brought you to Colorado

Kelly was born in Florida and I’m from Vermont. A new job opportunity moved us to Colorado from Switzerland where we had spent almost 10 years working for the US Embassy there.

Where do you work

Kelly works for the Department of Justice and I run a home based ebay store where I sell just about anything of value. I work for clients as well as list my own inventory.

Anything else you think the club members might enjoy.

I retired from the US Air Force in 1999. I was an aircraft maintenance technician and worked on fighter jets; F-4, F-15 and F-16 and others. One of the F-4’s I once worked on is now sitting on static display at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. I have flown both the F-15 and the F-16…what a thrill.  Kelly is the love of my life and we both enjoy the corvette hobby equally. She picked out the new black wheels on our Corvette.
